Discussion Q's

Discussion Questions for Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

Hey everyone! My book club and I just read and discussed Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters.  Usually I come up with all of the discussion questions on my own, but for this book I had to look some up to add to the few I came up with.  So the discussion questions with a star by them are the ones I thought of, while the rest I found on the Mount Prospect Public Library’s website, which can be found here.  Happy reading!

  1. How did Amelia’s narrative voice affect your reading experience? How would the book’s style change if it was from another character’s point of view?  What if this book were written in 3rd person?
  2. What does Evelyn see in Amelia? And why is Amelia drawn to Evelyn? Do you think they are a likely pair to be friends?
  3. *What was your first impression of Lucas? What about Emerson?  Did your feelings toward them change by the end of the book?
  4. *Did you figure out who the villains were before it was revealed? Did the way Amelia and Emerson kept changing their minds about Lucas’s role in the mummy masquerade throw you off the trail at all?
  5. *Were you satisfied with the ending of the story? Was it too “happily ever after?”  Did it seem plausible?
  6. *What did you think about Reis Hassan, the captain of Amelia’s dahabeeyah? Did you ever suspect him of taking part in the mummy plot?
  7. *Who was your favorite character? Why?
  8. What do you think about British interests in Egypt? Do you think it is okay for a country to get involved in the discovery and restoration of another country’s artifacts?
  9. Did reading this book help you learn anything about Egyptology? Did the book entice you to travel to Egypt?
  10. What type of reader would you recommend this book to? A person who likes mysteries?  Historical Fiction?  Romances?
